BJP aims for 12 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam for 2024 polls: Himanta

The BJP aims to win 12 seats out of 14 in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam, Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. At a party workers’ meeting here, Sarma said the BJP will start working immediately to make Narendra Modi Prime Minister of India for the third straight year.

“Assam has 14 Lok Sabha seats and we won nine last time. This time we need to win at least 12 seats,” he said in the presence of BJP President JP Nadda and Union Interior Minister Amit Shah. “We will not stop until the Lok Sabha elections. We want to see Narendra Modi as Prime Minister for the third time,” he added.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won three seats, one for the AIUDF and one for an independent.

Referring to the recent ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI), he said the government had decided to permanently eliminate grassroots groups from Assam soil.

He announced that an “ambitious scheme” worth Rs 5,000 crore will be introduced over the next year to create self-employment opportunities for two lakh youth in the state. “We have given employment to 38,983 youth from the promised posts in the government of one lakh. We will achieve the goal within the next six to seven months,” he said.

Sarma told BJP workers that 7,000 more families in each constituency will be enrolled in his flagship “Orunodoi” scheme, under which the state government provides monthly financial assistance of Rs. 1,000, which will increase to Rs. 1,250 from this month .

At the event, Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said peace had returned to Assam after the BJP came to power in both the center and the state.

“Years of failed Congressional regimes had eclipsed Assam, and the Northeast was India’s most backward region. Assam and the Northeast made progress thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership,” he said.
