Cal HC denies ED plea for custody of TMC leader’s ex-guard

A leave bank of the Kolkata High Court on Tuesday rejected a prayer from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take Saigal Hossain, the former security guard for arrested TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, into custody and interrogate him in Delhi. Hossain was arrested by the CBI for alleged complicity and amassing enormous wealth during his investigation into a cattle smuggling case. He is currently being held at Asansol Correctional Facility.

Judge Tirthankar Ghosh denied ED’s request to overturn a special court order by Asansol on Friday denying his request to take Hossain into custody and bring him to Delhi for questioning. The ED arrested Hossain on Friday for failing to cooperate with officers during questioning at the Asansol Correctional Facility, which was done with the permission of the Special Court.

The defendant is in pre-trial detention after spending 15 days in CBI custody following his arrest in June. Anubrata Mondal, District Chair of TMC in Birbhum, was arrested by the CBI on August 11 in connection with the cattle smuggling case.
