Congress on Wednesday designated Karnataka Prime Minister Basavaraj Bommai and BJP strongman BS Yediyurappa at breakfast at a Dalit’s home as a “photo op” for voting ahead of next year’s general election in the state.
While opposition leader Siddaramaiah denounced the ruling BJP for not doing enough to help the Dalits and other backward communities, AICC Karnataka General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala attacked the Bommai government by pointing to an incident where A dozen Dalit workers were reportedly attacked and detained at an estate in Chikkamagaluru.
“As the elections approach they have begun to remember Dalits, backward classes, SCs and STs, until now nothing has been done for their welfare by this government. Now they are visiting areas where Dalits and backward communities live because of the elections and voting,” Siddaramaiah, who is here to attend Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi, told reporters in response to a question. Bommai, Yediyurappa and other BJP leaders who are part of the party’s “Jana Sankalpa Yatra” had breakfast earlier Wednesday at the home of a Dalit in Ambedkar Nagar in Kamalapura village in Vijayanagara district.
Surjewala said in a tweet: “The ugly stench of Dalit atrocities under the Bommai government in Karnataka is sickening – a 54% increase from last year. When Bommai-BSY (Yediyurappa) does a photo op visiting a Dalit home, the BJP leader arrests 16 Dalits and an unfortunate woman loses her child.” Earlier in the day, Bommai shared breakfast with BJP strongman BS Yediyurappa. in the residence of a Dalit family in a village near Hospet. They visited the village as part of the ruling BJP’s Jan Sankalp Yatra, which began on Tuesday.
Hirala Kollarappa along with his two daughters Huligemma and Renuka served the VVIPs Kesari Bhaat, Mandakki Voggarane (Fried Puffed Rice with Spices), Fried Chili and Uppittu (Upma). According to government officials, the CM, along with Yediyurappa, Minister of Water Resources Govind Karjol and Minister of Tourism Anand Singh, visited Ambedkar Nagar in the village of Kamalapura in the newly formed Vijayanagara district.
Bommai also interacted with the family members.
