Delhi made its first use of the impact player option in Jaipur on Tuesday in the opening match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy to surpass Manipur by 71 runs. Opener Hiten Dalal smashed a 27-ball 47 to push Delhi to 167 for seven. The Nitish Rana-led squad then opted to replace Dalal with off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen, who took a couple of wickets in his three-over spell when Manipur was bundled for 96 in response.
The Impact Player rule allows a team to make a tactical switch mid-game.
Shokeen made his IPL debut with the Mumbai Indians earlier this year. He made his senior T20 debut after making a name for himself as a top-flight cricketer.
Ayush Badoni, who snapped eyeballs while playing for Lucknow Super Giants in the 2022 IPL, hit an important 15-ball-20. Himmat Singh provided the late boost with a seven-ball 25 that encompassed six boundaries.
Delhi can come up with a strong tempo attack in the presence of 100 Test veterans Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini, but the two for 23 in four overs from medium pace debutant Mayank Yadav stood out.
Ishant, who is aiming for a national comeback after a successful domestic season, took the wicket from Manipur opener Nitesh Sedai to finish with numbers 1-17 in three overs.
Delhi, who failed to reach the round of 16 in the three formats last domestic season, are aiming for a turnaround under new management led by captain Rana and head coach Abhay Sharma.
They expect tougher fights in Group B, which also has Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
Meanwhile, Goa also got off to a successful start in other Group B games with a five-wicket win over Tripura, while UP defeated Puducherry by 10 wickets using the VJD method.
