Namibia caused a stir as the Gerhard Erasmus-led side defeated reigning Asian champions Sri Lanka in the opening match of the first round of the T20 World Championships at Kardinia Park in Geelong. Namibia rebounded from 93-6 in the 15th over to a challenging 163-7 in 20 overs. Jan Frylinck (44 of 28) and JJ Smit (31 not of 16) did the damage in the death overs, sharing a 69-run, 33-ball whirlwind to raise concerns in the Sri Lankan dressing room.
In response, they boxed Sri Lanka for 108 runs in 19 overs. Ben Shikongo, Bernard Scholtz, Jan Frylinck and David Wiese each took two wickets for Namibia while JJ Smit won one wicket.
Shortly after Namibia’s thrilling victory, legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter to praise the Erasmus-led side.
“Namibia said to the cricket world today… ‘Nam’ yaad rakhna!” wrote.
Now, Namibian skipper Erasmus took to the microblogging site and responded to Tendulkar’s message with a three-word tweet.
“Nam” yaad rakhna!” wrote Erasmus.

At the awards ceremony after the game, Erasmus praised his players for the special win but said the team had a bigger aim in mind.
“Incredible journey, last year was a special experience for us. We started with a great win but there is still a lot of work to do during this tournament. It was a historic day for us. The opening day was very special but we would like to of continue here and qualify for the Super 12 stage.
“We also understand the bigger picture. Credit to Pierre (de Bruyn) for coaching this team, a culture that wins and sticks together. Given the limited resources, I don’t think there is anyone else who could lead such a narrow ship,” he said.
