World chess champion Magnus Carlsen made a hilarious comment on Barcelona’s elimination from the Champions League before losing to Bayern. Taking to Twitter, Carlsen wrote: “Good thing the Inter game isn’t tight so I can focus on chess and Barcelona on the Europa League.”

Barcelona were eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League for the second consecutive season on Wednesday, still before a 3-0 home defeat by Bayern Munich in a game that proved meaningless after Inter Milan beat Viktoria Pilsen 4-0 in the previous game had defeated.
Barcelona needed Inter to drop points so they started their game at the Camp Nou already without competition as Bayern and Inter secured the top two spots in Group C. Barcelona finishes third and secures a place in the Europa League. Bayern had already progressed and will be group winners.
“It’s a shame because we had high expectations for this competition,” said Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández. “It was a complicated group and everything went against us. This Champions League was very cruel for us.
Sadio Mané scored in the 10th minute, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting increased the lead in the 31st minute and Benjamin Pavard completed well into injury time in Bayern’s fifth win in five group games.
“I don’t think Barça expected us to be so brave,” said Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann. “The team issued a statement tonight.”
The failure of promotion is another humiliating setback for the Catalan club, which is likely to prove more costly than last season, when the team went on a spending spree to strengthen their squad, hoping to snag some of that money with one deep run to win back the European competition.
Barcelona are now being promoted to the second-tier Europa League after losing to eventual champions Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals of that competition last season.
