Never before has a bilateral ODI series looked so out of context. With the T20 World Cup in Australia starting later this month, the inconsequential three-game ODI series in India offers little incentive for the fringe players who missed the flight to Australia.
Washington Sundar, who replaced the injured Deepak Chahar in India’s squad for the remaining two ODIs against South Africa. On the other hand, much attention will be focused in South Africa on pacer Anrich Nortje, who could replace Kagiso Rabada, and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, who is likely to replace Tabraiz Shamsi.

Sundar for Bishnoi
Washington Sundar has joined India’s squad to replace Deepak Chahar. It is highly unlikely that India will make any changes to their pace attack since the first ODI. But they could consider a swap in the spin department, with the Sundar potentially coming into play for Ravi Bishnoi. The 23-year-old Sundar, who also struggled with injuries in his young career, last played an ODI in February this year. Sundar has played four Tests, four ODIs and 31 T20s for India.

Nortje for Rabada
Surprisingly, South Africa selected Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada for the first game. This is a fast and loose game with risks of injury ahead of the T20 World Championship. Certainly at least one of them will step down for Anrich Nortje.

Phehlukwayo for Shamsi
With Dwaine Pretorius out of that series and the T20 World Cup, Marco Jansen and Andile Phehlukwayo are the two main contenders and it’s possible South Africa could bring one or both over to buy them game time. Most likely, Phehlukwayo would replace Tabraiz Shamsi who was costly in both the T20I and ODI stages of this series.
There were only five ODIs in Ranchi, which isn’t enough to form an opinion on the surface. The first was in 2013 when England rolled for 155, the last was in 2019 when Australia defended 313. In T20Is, there were only five scores of 160 or more in the last 12, suggesting a bowler-friendly turn up.
