Mumbai City FC clinched a 2-0 win over Odisha FC in a hard-fought game in the Indian Super League on Saturday. A Shubam Sarangi own goal and a 94th-minute strike from Bipin Singh were enough to give the Islanders all three points. In a lackluster first half, neither side faced any danger in the opponent’s penalty area. Both defenses were alert to mop up the loose balls but it was the players’ inability to find the crucial pass as well as a failure to apply the finishing touches that rendered this game scoreless at half-time.
On the left, Bipin Singh worried the Odisha FC defense in the early stages of the game. In the sixth minute, Bipin’s low cross shot over the goal when none of Mumbai City’s attackers could find her.
Sahil Panwar swung a menacing ball from a corner to the far post in the 14th minute before being blocked by Phurba Lachenpa’s hand.
The first shot on goal came seven minutes before half-time when Nandhakumar Sekar smashed in from the left flank and fired a tame shot at goal. It was conveniently collected by the holder.
In the 44th minute, Diego Mauricio came to life as he sprinted past two Mumbai City players before firing a shot. The Brazilian’s attempt went wide of the target.
Five minutes into the second half, the deadlock was broken when the Islanders took the lead thanks to an own goal.
Lallianzuala Chhangte was found by Ahmed Jahouh on the right flank. Chhangte shot on goal after a quick exchange with Greg Stewart. Amrinder Singh saved with a foot but the ball hit defender Shubham Sarangi and rolled into the goal.
Just before the hour mark, Mauricio found space in the Islander’s box to take a shot. The violent blow was saved by Lachenpa. In the 72nd minute, Mauricio went down in the penalty area under pressure from Stewart. Objections to penalties remained in vain, the referee only decided on a goal kick.
In the 82nd minute Amrinder Stewart fended off with an outstanding save. The Scottish striker caught the ball from the left and hit the target with a low shot. Amrinder’s quick reflexes were enough to keep the ball out.
In the final action of the game, Mumbai City FC pushed forward with a scattered Odisha defence. Stewart unselfishly passed the ball to Bipin, who smashed the ball past Amrinder to score his 15th league goal for the club with the final shot of the game.
