Karwa Chauth, a fasting festival — traditionally followed by married women doing it to prolong the lives of their husbands — has been both celebrated and frowned upon. This year it was celebrated on October 13, which was a Thursday.
on the occasion Pictures were taken from different parts of the countryshowing women applying henna to their hands and preparing to see the moon in the night sky, after which they break their fast, which usually lasts a whole day, during which one is not allowed to eat or drink anything, not even water.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that although the festival continues to be celebrated, women have begun to shun some regressive beliefs. Their husbands have also taken on the role of supportive partners and fast with them to challenge certain patriarchal beliefs.
In the Bollywood circuit Karwa Chauth is celebrated extensively. This year was no different: from Shilpa Shetty Kundra to Katrina Kaif, many married actors fasted and posted cute selfies on Instagram.
However, others such as Tahira Kashyap and Sonam Kapoor shared their thoughts in a more progressive light, stating that while celebrating the festival, they did away with certain rituals.
Tahira took to Instagram to write a long post with her husband Ayushmann Khurrana.
She said that as a festival, Karwa Chauth “has more to do with personal choices”. Keeping it light, fun and impactful, she wrote in the caption: “Fast or not? Fruits and juices or dry quickly? Vegetarian or non-vegetarian? Just dress up and not hurry, both hurry/solo hurry/just you hurry/just me hurry, mehndi or not, work day or not… we did it all.”
Tahira continued, “Over the years I have come to realize that this has more to do with personal choices than what is being decided for me or for us. It’s so nice that we both respected each other over the years. Love and respect are all that matters and festivals are a gentle reminder of that.”
In the accompanying video, which was a montage of images, she posed in traditional attire – with a maroon satin kurta, a printed blue salwaar, a blue sheer dupatta and a pair of matching earrings.
Husband Ayushmann appeared in an all white look with a white see-through shirt and white pants.
Tahira’s take on the festival was echoed by the actor Sonam Kapoor, who shared a similar thought. Taking to Instagram, the new mum rocked a Banarasi lehenga and choli set – complete with a thickly embroidered border, a green brocade blouse and a soft pink lehenga.
She left her long hair loose and accessorised it with a gold necklace, earrings and bangle.
In the caption, she revealed that she was celebrating the festival but not fasting. “My husband is not a fan of Karwa Chauth as he believes fasting should only be one changing. Well, I never kept it!”
That ‘Neerja‘ star continued, “But we both firmly believe that celebrations and traditions are good reasons for family and friends to get together. I love that my mom loves to celebrate it and I love being a part of it and dressing up.”
Tagging her mom, she wrote: “@kapoor.sunita you always throw the best dos! Your energy and generosity is legendary and I hope to follow the same path! Happy KC everyone!”
The actress’ outfit was by Hyderabad-based designer Gaurang Shah and her necklace and earrings were provided by her mother.
