Pakistani wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan has been in top form for his team for the last two years which has seen him rise to the top of the ICC rankings in T20Is. Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav has also been in charge since his debut last year and is currently second in the rankings behind Rizwan. On Friday, Rizwan hit an unbeaten 78 to help Pakistan beat Bangladesh in the opening game of a tri-series in Hamilton.
During the post-match press conference, Rizwan was asked if Suryakumar would catch him at the top of the charts.
While praising the Indian batsman, Rizwan said hitting up and down the middle was different.
“Suryakumar Yadav is a good player. I like the way he plays but if you look at the scheme of things, hitting up front and in the middle is different,” said Rizwan after helping Pakistan beat Bangladesh in the first T20I of the Tri-Series.
Rizwan, with 854 rating points, leads Suryakumar (838) with 16 rating points in the T20I ranking.
Rizwan went on to hint that he likes to play by the team’s demands rather than by rankings and awards, which he sees as an added incentive.
“I’m trying to meet the demands of the team and if I’m rewarded with No. 1 and Man of the Match, that’s on God. There are times when you need to get 40 deliveries out of 60 the teams. So I’m trying to meet the demands of the team,” he added.
