‘Likely going to fight’: Wasim Akram on veteran India Bowler’s chances at T20 World Championship

India’s road to the T20 World Cup has been marred by injuries. It started with spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja missing through injury, followed by star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the marquee event for the same reason. Even Deepak Chahar, who was on the standby list, has reportedly retired from the T20 World Championship with an injury. In their absence, other pacesetters such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh will have additional responsibilities. However, former Pakistan cricket team pacemaker Wasim Akram believes Bhuvneshwar Kumar will struggle at the T20 World Cup.

“India have Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he’s good with the new ball but with his pace he’ll probably struggle there if the ball doesn’t swing. But he’s undoubtedly a very good bowler, swings both ways, has the Yorker. But in Australia you need speed,” Akram was quoted as saying by the Khaleej Times.

“You see this Kashmiri guy, Umran Malik, he is fast. India needs to stick with him because he has pace. If I was in the Indian think tank, I would have called him into the squad all along,” he added.

Akram also praised the rise of Suryakumar Yadav. “He’s a very dangerous player, he’s a 360-degree player. I first saw him when he joined Kolkata Knight Riders. I spent two years with him. I was amazed that KKR accepted him He was young, he was 19 or 20 then, imagine if he were the (KKR) captain now,” Wasim said.

“I think he’s the future as far as the T20 format is concerned. It’s a pleasure to watch him, without a doubt one of my favorite players in this format.”
