Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will miss Sunday’s top game against Bundesliga high-flyer Freiburg due to persistent shoulder problems, coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed. “Manuel won’t play, he’s still in pain. I hope he can be back next week, but Freiburg will be too early for him,” said Nagelsmann, whose team now has to do without their captain for the second time in a row. “It’s annoying, but that’s the way it is,” he added.

Neuer missed Bayern’s 4-2 Champions League win over Viktoria Pilsen in midweek with a bruised shoulder but has played every minute of the league season so far.

Nagelsmann confirmed that he will again be replaced by substitute keeper Sven Ulreich on Sunday.

Bayern remain under enormous pressure ahead of the Freiburg game after winning just one of their last six games in the Bundesliga.

The all-time champion is currently in fourth place, two points behind second-placed Freiburg and four points behind leaders Union Berlin.

With Freiburg in Munich and Union hosting Borussia Dortmund this weekend, Nagelsmann insisted it was up to Bayern to pick up the two surprise packages at the top of the table.

“It’s less about the performance of Union and Freiburg, but about our own,” he said. “It’s up to us to get back to where we want to be.”

Bayern’s worst start to the season in 12 years has increased the pressure on Nagelsmann, who had already come under criticism last season after Bayern’s quarter-finals in the Champions League against Villarreal.

But club chief executive Oliver Kahn backed the 35-year-old coach this week, saying there was “no doubt” about the quality of his work.
