Coming into the 3-match ODI series against South Africa with a point to prove, Mohammed Siraj put on an exemplary pace-bowling show, bagging 5 wickets while running at an economy rate of 4.52 cashed. As India won the series 2-1 after claiming an impressive 7-wicket win in Tuesday’s final game in New Delhi, Siraj was deservedly named Player of the Series.
At the awards ceremony after the game, Siraj was duly honored by former Indian cricketer Murali Kartik for his heroics in the series. To add a personal touch, Kartik attempted to speak Hyderabadi jargon to Siraj and his attempt was warmly acknowledged by Indian Pacer.
“Miyan, kya bowling card hain aap! Sahi bola my Hyderabadi my? (A bit of bowling you’ve been doing lately! Did I say it right in Hyderabadi?)” Kartik asked Siraj as he arrived at the awards ceremony. “Bilkul sir, (absolutely sir)” Siraj replied with a smile on his face.
Speaking further about his performance in the game and throughout the series, Siraj said it’s good for him to get the opportunity to play against a quality side like South Africa.
“Playing against a good team gives you a lot of confidence. I had to take responsibility. I try to figure out the right pitches early in the innings. As a fast bowler you need that fire and that passion in you and I’m thrilled to receive this Player of the Series award,” he said.
Siraj is still fighting for a spot in the India squad at the 2022 T20 World Cup as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah. The Pacer is reportedly set to fly to Australia, but whether or not he will be in the main 15-man squad is yet to be confirmed.
