Young Rudrankksh Patil won gold in the men’s 10m air rifle event at the ISSF World Championships here on Friday, becoming only the second Indian after the legendary Abhinav Bindra to achieve the feat. Patil also secured a quota for the country for the Paris 2014 Olympics. This was India’s second Olympic quota. 18-year-old Rudrankksh beat Italy’s Danilo Dennis Sollazzo 17-13 in the gold medal match after a brilliant performance from behind.

Four quota places are available in Olympic events at the World Cup this year.

India had recently achieved their first quota at the World Shotgun Championships in Croatia, courtesy of Bhowneesh Mendiratta in the men’s trap event.

In his first World Championship appearance, Rudrankksh trailed 4-10 in the new format gold medal match to determine the top two.

The Italian shooter held the lead for most of the final but the Indian made a stunning comeback to emerge victorious.

Promoted

Rudrankksh led the qualification and secured the odds after entering the gold medal match second in the rankings.

Beijing 2008 Olympic champion Bindra had won his world championship gold in his 10m air rifle competition in 2006 in Zagreb, Croatia.
