Spotify announced early last year that it would soon be adding support for “CD quality music, lossless audio format” in its app. But fast forward to now, well over a year on, and we still haven’t covered it. It was almost as if the music streaming service had changed its mind about the addition, except that a new report now reveals the feature could be coming through a new ‘Platinum’ tier subscription.
9to5Mac Reader Drew shared with the site some details about a survey he received: “I received a survey from Spotify today after canceling Spotify Premium for Apple Music after 10 years with Spotify. The survey gave me details about Spotify’s upcoming subscription tiers and asked if I would switch back for any of those features “in the next 30 days.”
The details also included some screenshots showing what the Platinum tier gets you. The following are the features that you as a subscriber can benefit from in addition to the basic Individual plan:
- studio sound
- headphone tuner
- Audio Insights
- Library Pro
- Playlist Pro
- Limited Spotify Podcasts
In the US, you can use this for $19.99 per month for 1 account. If that sounds a bit steep, then don’t worry because when the plan is launched in India it will likely be considerably cheaper – just like the individual plan. However, considering it’s twice the amount of the usual plan, it’s a big ask – especially when you consider Apple Music, which already offers hi-fi audio at a much cheaper price.
Anyhow, while the screenshots are almost certainly genuine – the font and overall design match Spotify’s style – we’ll have to wait for something more official to confirm.
